DR. SEUSS’S
GREEN EGGS AND HAM
AND OTHER STORIES

I do not like green eggs and ham.
I do not like them, Sam-I-am

Originally titled DR. SEUSS ON THE LOOSE, when it first aired on television in 1973, DR. SEUSS’S GREEN EGGS AND HAM AND OTHER STORIES ($25) offers a trio of Theodor Geisel tales, which are brought together by The Cat in the Hat, who serves as the host and bridging element between the stories. First up is The Sneetches, which offers a tale of social intolerance concerned with yellow, bird like creatures known as Sneetches, who inhabit the beaches. Some Sneetches have a star on their bellies, while the others do not. Star bellied Sneetches are elitist, and look down their noses at their non-star bellied brethren. The non-star bellied Sneetches are envious, because the star bellied Sneetches exclude them from all their activities. One day Sylvester McMonkey McBean appears with a Star-On machine and offers the non-star bellied Sneetches the opportunity to have stars... for only three dollars. With his Star-Off machine, Sylvester McMonkey McBean then appeals to the elitist, original star bellied Sneetches... charging them only ten dollars for star removal. As you might imagine, thus begins a vicious circle for the Sneetches, with Sylvester McMonkey McBean being the only winner.

The Zax is a much simpler tale involving a north-going Zax and a south-going Zax, who meet, then stubbornly refuse to give way- each standing their ground indefinitely. Green Eggs And Ham is concerned with a character named Sam-I-Am, who pesters another individual about the title dish... which he refuses to eat. However, Sam-I-Am proves very persistent, following and cajoling the reluctant diner about various ways he might eat green eggs and ham. Vocal talent for DR. SEUSS ON THE LOOSE includes Allan Sherman, Hans Conried, Paul Winchell and Bob Holt.

Warner Home Video has made DR. SEUSS’S GREEN EGGS AND HAM AND OTHER STORIES (aka DR. SEUSS ON THE LOOSE) available on Blu-ray Disc in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio presentation that has been encoded onto the disc with the AVC codec. The 1080p presentation for DR. SEUSS’S GREEN EGGS AND HAM AND OTHER STORIES is indeed a beauty, and on par with the other Dr. Seuss titles released by Warner on Blu-ray. Image sharpness is very good with the black outlines appearing strongly defined. Colors are quite vivid and pop nicely, while maintaining complete stability. Blacks are inky, while the whites appear clean. Contrast is just fine for this type of animated program. There are flaws in the original animation that one will notice in this high definition presentation, but otherwise, the picture is quite solid. Some mild grain is present in the image.

DR. SEUSS’S GREEN EGGS AND HAM AND OTHER STORIES (aka DR. SEUSS ON THE LOOSE) is presented on Blu-ray Disc with a 1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. Made for television fidelity speakers circa 1973, the sound quality has some limitations related to the recording technology of the time. Sure, the lossless encoding maximizes what the recordings have to offer, but there are age related limitations present. Most signs of background hiss and other audible anomalies have been cleaned up during the mastering process, so the sound has limited signs of sonic debris. Dialogue and singing voices are clean sounding and easy to understand. A Spanish Dolby Digital monaural track is also encoded onto the disc, as are English and Spanish subtitles.

The interactive menus provide access to the standard scene selection and set up features, as well as the extras, which are limited to four Interactive Puzzles two for Green Eggs And Ham and one each for The Sneetches and The Zax. Disc two offers a DVD copy of the program for those who are on the fence about making the upgrade to Blu-ray.

DR. SEUSS’S GREEN EGGS AND HAM AND OTHER STORIES (aka DR. SEUSS ON THE LOOSE) is a delightful release, and while Green Eggs And Ham is the featured tale in this release, The Sneetches actually the most memorable and entertaining attraction. The Blu-ray offers solid video and audio. Recommended.
