With its premise of household as international spies, who can speak out of human earshot, CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE ($36) is loaded with more than its fair share of James Bond references… that some of which ticked this reviewer. Sure it is not Shakespeare by any stretch of the imagination, CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE is a fairly amusing family friendly sequel to 2001’s CATS & DOGS that will certainly hit the mark more often than not with its intended juvenile audience. In this outing, Kitty Galore (voiced by Bette Midler) is an evil hairless female feline, who is bent on taking down man’s best friend as a first step to having her revenge on their human masters. Diggs (voiced by James Marsden) is a German Shepherd police dog with obedience issues, who has been newly recruited into the canine spy network. Teamed with veteran agent Butch (voiced by Nick Nolte), the new recruit goes out into the field to track down a pigeon named Seamus (voiced by Katt Williams), who is suspected of working for Kitty Galore. During their bird hunt, Diggs and Butch cross paths with a feline agent named Catherine (voiced by Christina Applegate), who is also after Kitty Galore. Similar missions lead to a little unprecedented inter-agency cooperation between cats and dogs, as they try to take down the rogue feline foe. The human cast and vocal talent behind CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE also includes Neil Patrick Harris, Sean Hayes, Wallace Shawn, Roger Moore, Joe Pantoliano, Michael Clarke Duncan, Chris O'Donnell, Jack McBrayer, Fred Armisen, Kiernan Shipka, Paul Rodriguez, Elizabeth Daily and Phil LaMarr.

Warner Home Video has made CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE available on Blu-ray Disc in a 1.78:1 aspect ratio presentation that has been encoded onto the disc with the AVC codec (surprise, surprise). The 1080p presentation delivers a bright, colorful and attractive image that is certainly to please. Things usually appear quite sharp, nicely defined and quite dimensional. Sure, slight bits of softness that creep in, usually where CGI is integrated with live action, but for the most part, the picture looks quite goods. Colors are vibrant and well saturated, while the flesh tones are totally appealing. Blacks are deep, whites are crisp and contrast is smooth. Shadow detail is just fine for this type of undemanding material. The elements from which CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE has been mastered are free from flaws. There is a nice veneer of grain within the image, which gives the picture an organic quality.

CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE is presented on Blu-ray Disc with a 5.1 channel DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. This is a better than expected soundtrack, especially when one considers that CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE is pretty much a kid’s film. The sound design is reasonably aggressive, with fairly terrific implementation of the outlying channels. Sound effects zip around the sound field effortlessly, and are distinct. Thanks to the lossless encode, fidelity is quite excellent, with both the music and effects having wonderful presence. The bass channel, is percussive and ground shaking. Dialogue is always crystal clear and easy to understand. French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 channel tracks are also encoded onto the disc, as are English, French and Spanish subtitles.

The interactive menus allow one access to the standard scene selection and set up features, as well as the supplements. The Wile E. Coyote and Road Runner cartoon entitled Coyote Falls that accompanied CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE in theaters is presented here. Featurettes and other programs include the following: Dogs Dishing: Tails From The Bark Side Of Hollywood (nine minutes), Meow-Takes (four minutes), The Best Of Cat Vs. Dog Animated Showdowns (five minutes) and Yogi Bear Sneak Peek (three minutes). Disc two offers a DVD copy of the movie for those who are on the fence about making the upgrade to Blu-ray, along with a Digital Copy of the film.

CATS & DOGS: THE REVENGE OF KITTY GALORE will tickle adults occasionally, but its intended juvenile audience is certain to be fully engaged by the feline and canine spy antics. The Blu-ray presentation is pretty terrific on the video and audio fronts.
