IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU

While not a classic of the genre by any stretch of the imagination, IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU ($29) is a charming and sweet romantic comedy. In IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU, Nicolas Cage portrays police officer Charlie Lang, a genuinely nice guy, who offers to split the proceeds of the lottery ticket he just purchased, when he finds himself unable to come up with a tip for waitress Yvonne Biasi (Bridget Fonda). As you might expect, the lottery ticket is a winner, but the thought of sharing the prize does not sit well with Charlie’s materialistic wife Muriel (Rosie Perez). Eventually, Charlie’s good nature and generosity causes a rift between him and Muriel, who decides she wants a divorce, as well as all of the proceeds of the lottery ticket, including the share that has been given to Yvonne. Of course, being a knight in shining armor, Charlie decides to do what is right and stands up for Yvonne, the damsel in distress, whom he has also begun falling for… The cast of IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU also features Wendell Pierce, Isaac Hayes, Víctor Rojas, Seymour Cassel, Stanley Tucci, J.E. Freeman, Red Buttons, Richard Jenkins, Robert Dorfman and Charles Busch.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has made IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU available on Blu-ray Disc in a 1.85:1 aspect ratio presentation that has been encoded onto the disc with the AVC codec. The 1080p presentation is really very nice, despite the fact that most folks won’t find this to be a demonstration title. IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU was photographed in a slightly diffuse style that is popular with romantic comedies. Image sharpness and detail are good for the photographic style, but the picture doesn’t snap the way newer movies tend to do in high definition. Colors are reproduced with a natural level of saturation and come across in an attractive manner. Blacks appear just fine, as do the whites. Contrast is quite smooth. Shadow detail is good, but the picture isn’t demanding in this regard. The elements from which IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU has been transferred appear quite clean. Grain is ever-present, and sometimes a little heavy, but always ensures the film-like quality of the presentation.

IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU is presented on Blu-ray Disc with a 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtrack. Considering that IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU is a talky romantic comedy, it should come as no surprise that the film features a fairly unremarkable sound design. As expected, the majority of the sound is localized front and center. There are some channel separations across the front, with ambience and musical fill falling to the rear channels. The musical component is well served by the lossless encode, but there is no wow factor here. Dialogue reproduction is clean and fully intelligible. French and Portuguese Dolby TrueHD soundtracks are also present, as is a Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 channel track. Subtitles are available in English, French, Spanish and Portuguese.

Full motion video, animation and sound serve to enhance the disc’s interactive menus. Through the menus, one has access to the standard scene selection and set up features, as well as some Bonus Trailers. IT COULD HAPPEN TO YOU is also BD-Live enabled (requires a Profile 2.0 player).
