How could you not like a show about a friendly neighborhood serial killer??? I am sure there are those who would be put off by the subject matter, but anyone with a strong constitution is certain to love DEXTER. Unlike anything other show on television, DEXTER features a serial killer as its protagonist and hero or should I say anti-hero. Based upon Jeff Lindsay’s novel Darkly Dreaming Dexter, DEXTER tells the continuing story of Dexter Morgan (Michael C. Hall), who works for the Miami Metro Police Department as a blood spatter analyst, and has a side job as a vigilante/serial killer, that allows him to take out the trash in his local jurisdiction. Growing up the adopted son of a police officer, Dexter has found a way to use his gruesome predilections for the general good. Plain and simple… Dexter only kills those truly deserving individuals- in other words; those who have managed to fall through the cracks in the legal system and have escape justice.

Those closest to Dexter, but completely unaware of how moonlights aware from his day job, include his foster sister Debra Morgan (Jennifer Carpenter), a homicide detective that places her and her brother on continuously intersecting paths and Dexter’s girlfriend Rita Bennett (Julie Benz), whose troubled past with men leaves her suspicious of her boyfriend… but for all the wrong reasons. Season three of DEXTER places our anti-hero on intersecting paths with Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado (Jimmy Smits), as well as a new serial killer, dubbed The Skinner; additionally Dexter’s relationship with Rita is taken to a whole new level when our anti-hero learns he is a father to be. The cast of DEXTER also features C.S. Lee, Christina Robinson, Lauren Vélez, David Zayas, James Remar, Erik King, Preston Bailey, Jaime Murray, Desmond Harrington, David Ramsey, Valerie Cruz and Keith Carradine.

DEXTER: THE THIRD SEASON ($58) comes to Blu-ray in a three-disc set that features the following twelve episodes that were aired during year three: Our Father, Finding Freebo, The Lion Sleeps Tonight, All In The Family, Turning Biminese, Sí Se Puede, Easy As Pie, The Damage A Man Can Do, About Last Night, Go Your Own Way, I Had A Dream and Do You Take Dexter Morgan?.

CBS/Paramount Home Entertainment via Showtime has made all twelve episodes from DEXTER: THE THIRD SEASON available on Blu-ray Disc in 1.78:1 wide screen presentations that have been encoded onto the disc with the AVC codec. DEXTER remains one of the absolute best looking series on television, and the 1080p presentations contained in this Blu-ray set are a testament to excellent visual qualities of the series. The picture is wonderfully crisp, in addition to demonstrating excellent clarity and dimensionality. Colors can run hot, like the sweltering Miami climate; plus some of the hues are further pushed by the way things are lit and shot. Blacks are deep and the whites appear crisp. Contrast also shows evidence of being pushed and running a little hot. Like the preceding sets, some grain/video noise is noticeable in the darker scenes.

All of the episodes that comprise DEXTER: THE THIRD SEASON are presented on Blu-ray Disc with 5.1 channel Dolby TrueHD soundtracks. Kudos again, to the powers that be, releasing this collection of episodes with lossless codec. Lossless should be the standard for all TV shows on Blu-ray, instead of the exception. Like previous seasons, the episodic television sound design favors the forward soundstage, with some good channel separation across the front. As expected, the rear channels deliver a few active effects, as well as the usual complement of ambient sounds and musical fill. The lossless encode really enhances the musical component, especially the show’s wonderful theme music. The bass channel adds weight. Dialogue is crisply rendered and generally easy to understand. A Spanish Dolby Digital 2.0 channel track has also been encoded onto the disc, as have English subtitles.

Full motion video, animation and sound serve to enhance the interactive menus. Through the menus, one has access to the standard episode selection and set up features. Supplements are of the BD-Live variety (requires a Profile 2.0 player).

DEXTER is one of the most unique and truly entertaining series on television. The Blu-ray presentations contained in DEXTER: THE THIRD SEASON maintain the level of excellence demonstrated in the previous releases. Highly Recommended.
